On Mediashift Robert K. Logan of the University of Toronto, former collaborator of Marshall McLuhan , lists the properties of new media, anticipating his next book “Understanding New Media: Extending Marshall McLuhan”. The attempt is to define new media, continuing on the path traced by McLuhan in "Understanding Media" ( The tools of communication ). For now we have to settle for a simple list: 1. two-way communication 2. ease of access and dissemination of information 3. continuous learning 4. alignment and integration 5.

Although one or two of them can also be found in the mass media, the specificity of the Internet is that it includes them all. In addition to the Internet, Logan also includes emails, blogs, search engines, PDAs , cell phones, portable players, podcasting, social networks, YouTube, Flickr, virtual reality, RFID, in the "new media" category (perhaps a little too broad). etc… to which it also attributes the following properties: 6. portability and temporal flexibility (time-shifting), which gives the user space-time freedom 7.
