If you live in a wifi jungle your neighbors wireless router signals may be interferring with yours degrading performance, especially if a few of you are on the same channel. Moving your channel to a less used one can help.
To see if this is true in your case, download inSSIDer and run it, it will show all the wifi in your area and what channels folks are on, including yours. If that channel is congested config your router to use a less busy channel, usualy there are 10 to select from.
