What are the indicators that I need to increase RAM capacity and what is the best way to do that? More RAM memory is good in general but only if the hardware supports it and the operating system can use it, in the windows family of OS XP, Vista, Win7 & 8 each has a minimum requirement although minimum is seldom adequate. To figure things out you need to give at least operating system and your PC manufacturing spec which provides max RAM expansion. One indicator of insufficient RAM is a very busy hard drive since it is using physical disk to swap memory when it needs it to compensate for lack of Random Access Memory. General performance is a product of several factors and if RAM is not the bottleneck other items may be. If you have Windows experience index under system it will show which part of your system is keeping the score low. If your RAM is not the low point you may want to consider upgrading the bottleneck item. See typical example Typical

Here is a chart that shows maximum Memory Limits for Windows Releases. You should be able to see if it is worth putting more RAM or not depending on OS being used or at least make an informed decision.
